THANG DO
Thang Do
In a world increasingly divided by stark ideological lines, we seem to have lost the aspiration for idealism. Thang Do, hailing from a country where the transition from monarchy to modernism and postmodernism remains unfulfilled, manages to encapsulate the richness and complexity of a culture where enduring feudalism coexists with an unyielding capitalist drive. This creates a dynamic social landscape that stands in contrast to the Western norms and conformist mindset.
For many Vietnamese born and raised locally, the concept of the “American/Australian dream” looms over every day’s course of action, blending traditional values with postmodern cynicism at the same time to manifest the lofty modernistic dream of mastering human control. In this context, Thang Do's practice takes shape through spiritual vessels, installations, and performances that manifest deep-seated desires, stripping the anticipated political setting away from spectators and leaving them with an intensely humanistic yearning for ascension.
