Singularity
THANG DO X VICTORIA MANGANO Sound
Yarra Sculpture Gallery Melbourne
n. The singularity, located at the centre of a black hole and encased by an event horizon from which nothing can escape, represents a point where gravity is so intense that space and time break down.
Beyond the event horizon lies the unknown, yet we gravitate towards it. It is when we are left with no other option when we have become powerless, that the only way out is in. Like a phoenix rising from ashes, such a force as powerful as the black hole may be needed to spark a miracle, for what else could?
We fear black holes for what they may do to us, that they are the end of things, the omnipotent force from which nothing can escape and eventually gets devoured. The same things were said to anything we alienate, like foreigners, like the queers, like feminism…
When we find ourselves in a perpetual state of suspense and passivity, the allure of power and freedom on the other end of the spectrum becomes the only reason to live, hope, and strive. We long for the day our roles are reversed.
To choose between the one being devoured and the one devouring, I would rather become the latter.
Cravingly,
Thang.
